If you’re a parent or a high school junior reading this, you’re probably asking the same question everyone asks at some point:
“When are we supposed to book senior photos?”
The short answer?
Earlier than you think.
The longer (and much more helpful) answer? Let’s walk through it month by month, so you know exactly what to expect—and don’t end up scrambling.
Junior Year: January – March
Planning Season
This is when senior photos should first be on your radar.
Start researching photographers
Look through styles you like (classic, modern, bold, studio, outdoor, etc.)
Talk about when your senior wants photos taken
If your photographer offers a Senior Team / Influencer Team, this is usually when applications open
👉 You don’t have to book yet—but this is the time to get informed.
Junior Year: April – May
Prime Booking Window
This is one of the best times to book your senior session.
Why?
Summer and fall dates start filling fast
You have the most flexibility with location and timing
You’re not rushed or stressed
Many families wait until “later” and are surprised to learn that photographers book out months in advance, especially for fall.
Summer Before Senior Year: June – August
Popular Session Season
Summer sessions are popular because:
School is out
Seniors are more relaxed
Golden hour light is 🔥
That said, this is also when availability starts shrinking.
If you’re booking during summer:
Be flexible with dates
Understand some photographers may already be limited
Don’t wait until the last minute hoping for “one more opening”
Senior Year: September – October
Peak Fall Season
Fall senior photos are in high demand for a reason:
Cooler temps
Gorgeous colors
Perfect timing for graduation announcements
But here’s the reality:
👉 Most prime fall dates will book up pretty quick.
If you want fall photos, booking months earlier is key.
Senior Year: November – December
Late, But Still Possible
At this point:
Some photographers are fully booked
Outdoor options may be limited by weather
Timelines feel tighter
You can still get beautiful senior photos—but you may have fewer choices when it comes to location, timing, and overall experience.
